At the beginning of every school year, each class has a class meeting. At three of those class meetings (freshman/sophomore/junior) this year, students were told they would not be allowed to take cafeteria food up to the Growler to eat for lunch, which many students did last year. In spite of that, the senior class was told they were allowed to take food purchased in the cafeteria and eat it in the Growler.
Staff who work growler/library duty during lunch times were told that students were not allowed to bring cafeteria food upstairs. After several students this year were denied access to the Growler with cafeteria-purchased food, teachers were corrected. The same staff who were told students weren’t allowed to take their cafeteria food upstairs were sent an email telling them students were in fact allowed to take their food upstairs – under certain circumstances (they get their food and go right up to the Growler)
The message about the Growler is not the only confusing rule that students have had trouble with. One main rule that students struggle with is how much teacher’s rules vary about technology. Some teachers will let students have a phone out or headphones in as long as they’re not teaching. While others say no outside technology in sight ever. Many students struggle with having to remember which teachers feel which way.
Another rule that students encounter a problem with is some teacher’s rules about flex. Some teachers are extremely lenient with their flex rules and will let students do almost anything in their flex. Although some teachers will have their rooms as quiet rooms or only for work. This seems to be a complication for some students (and teachers) due to the fact that on some days and flexes, there are fewer flexes for students to attend.
Flexes, technology, and the Growler are just three of the rules in the school that complicate things for students. A solution to this problem could simply be just having less variation in what rules are applied and how much they’re enforced. It’s understood that some rules will vary. There are just some points where it starts to become a struggle for some students.
