After years of rivalry, the Big Spring Bulldogs beat Shippensburg in the Little Brown Jug Game, 21-7, for the first time since 2010.
Going into the game that night Big Spring and Shippensburg’s records were 0-1 respectively. At the beginning of the game, Shippensburg scored quickly. Shippensburg scored the first touchdown in the second quarter making it 7-0. Big Spring then scored shortly after that and scored again after that. Big Spring’s first touchdown was made by Ben Fickel. Fickel also came in with an interception after, scoring another touchdown. Big Spring, Grant Hall then scored the last touchdown in the fourth quarter. This ended the game 7-21.
These became the winning touchdowns. After that, the action slowed down considerably, and when the clock hit 0, the Bulldog crowd celebrated as Shippensburg’s players and fans started to leave the stadium.
The student sections, fans, and players lined the sideline to loudly sing the alma mater. The “little brown jug” is big talk at Big Spring. Previously, the “LBJ” sat in the main office of the high school because nobody had a “home” for it. 13 years ago, when Big Spring had the “little brown jug” last it was kept in a showcase. This year, Scott Penner, the athletic director at Big Spring said “ we are gonna try to put it in one of the showcases in the cafeteria.” As of this year, there is only one trophy case remaining in the cafeteria. The “little brown jug” now remains in the cafeteria showcase at Big Spring High School.
