On Saturday, Feb 3, both Boiling Springs and Big Spring came together to play volleyball for a big cause. All the proceeds from this tournament were split in half between both school’s Mini-THON clubs. Mini-THON overalls, which is the term for the president of the club, Kate Lay and Alexa Brown, have been in contact with each other since this summer, attempting to plan a joint fundraising event. The profits for the day of the fundraiser were $470 overall. Both schools split the profit to get money to add to each program’s overall total. With profits from the teams from the school added, Big Spring Mini-THON made a total of $415.
“We chose to have the tournament at Boiling Springs because we did not have any open weekends in our own gym, and were fortunate enough to have the contact information of Boiling Springs’s overall, Alexa Brown,” said Big Spring overall, Kate Lay. In years past, both schools have held separate fundraisers and sports tournaments, but the thought of having one together excited the entire community. Twelve teams participated in the tournament, using the double-elimination style of tournament play. Two Big Spring teams made it to the championship, beating out all of the Boiling Spring’s competitors. “I thought it would be a great thing for my friends and I to do, because we knew it would be for a great cause, and it would be really fun,” said junior Grant Hall, who was on the second-place team.
Advisor for Boiling Springs’s Mini-THON, Alli Rose, said, “Everyone who attended the tournament said that they would love to make this a tradition between our two schools!” Both leadership groups for the clubs have already started plans to make this an annual event. The prize for the winning team was gold medals. Freshman, Grace Long, who was a part of the winning team, said, “I would definitely play in this joint tournament again because it was a fun experience to play against a rival, and to meet a bunch of new people.” The final total of money raised will be revealed at Mini-THON which is on April 19 for both schools.
