The new clubs sweeping through Big Spring High School are sparking students’ creativity and allowing them to truly express themselves. Over the past 2 years, so many clubs have started that almost every student has joined at least one club. This is helping students show their passion for something they care about.
Joseph Kucker, advisor of 3 clubs, said, “This is a good way for kids to get together and have a fun activity to do during school.” He runs a fashion club, Dungeon and Dragons Club, and also a Role Playing Game club, and sees these as great opportunities for all kinds of students. Kucker does not see much downside to clubs. “The only negative to clubs I can think of is students who are involved in many clubs, are spreading themselves thin and their grades and work start to suffer.”
Volleyball club leader, member of Student Christian Athletes, as well as Club Aduro, Mini-THON club, and fantasy sports club, Max Long said, “Clubs give students something fun in the middle of their day.” Micah Artz, physical education teacher, started volleyball club. He said he loves seeing, “students excited about new possibilities.”
Starting clubs is not all sunshines and rainbows; there are also many hardships with this along the way. Kucker had little to no problem getting people in the door for his club. He said, “Especially for the D and D club, I had a group before I started it.” However, he also said that for the fashion club, “Waves of people come in; some people stick, some of them don’t.” On the other side of things, Artz said, “The logistical stuff about dividing teams and keeping everything competitive with the very diverse skill level is tough.” This shows some of the potential challenges within a club and how making things fair was a crucial part of the process. Long also said, “It was hard to get structure for the volleyball club.” The structure of a club was a big problem because of teams playing every other week. This was because of the popularity of the club.
Other new clubs this year include photography club and flag football club.
