Former Carlisle Borough Police officer Mike Sturm, who became the director of safety and security on August 19, now strives to ensure safety for the Big Spring School District. Sturm has teamed up with school resource officer Kyle Schlusser, who came to the district three years prior.
“The new position is a great start in expanding the safety and security of the schools, alongside the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department,” Sturm said.
Sturm has a large responsibility as director of safety and security. He said, “I look forward to being the director and learning the role,” showing his excitement and seriousness about the role and the priorities he needs for the job. As of Sep of 2024, America has had a total of 35 different school shootings nationwide. Sturm is determined to keep Big Spring safer than ever, “I can guide and support the district with my years in law enforcement and want to make the district a safe place to work and go to school,” he said.
“it is always nice to have that second law enforcement opinion on situations when dealing with incidents,” said school resource Officer Schlusser.
Schlusser has been the only school resource officer for the past year until director Sturm was hired, adding additional help around the school(s). Schlusser said earlier, “Honestly, it is nice having a second person in the school to help cover the large area during busy times and passing of class.”
