Students are facing less freedom this year with ‘A’ Flex being a learning-only period. There has been a lot of controversy these past few weeks of school.
Last year, Big Spring High school faced a huge downfall in Keystone grades and administrators figured that it was because students had an amplification of freedom. It was thought that taking ‘A’ Flex away would resolve this issue, however, that is not the case. All Big Spring High School students, especially the juniors and seniors, are facing severe struggle and unfairness coming from the new flex routine.
A better solution would be to just make this change for the freshman and sophomores since they’re the only students who take the keystone testing and could use the learning properly. With this solution, the juniors and seniors could enjoy their last school year/s with some more enjoyable memories but instead, they have to sit in class for an extra period doing work that isn’t graded while not being allowed to work ahead because it is unfair to the technical education students who are not able to attend ‘A’ flex.
The new Flex policy will most likely help fix the issue because it is forcing the students who failed the past year’s keystones to gain further education. As long as the student’s teachers are strict about the kids paying more attention, this method will work. However, there are many other ways to solve this problem without affecting the other students.
A major solution would be to only have freshmen and sophomores follow the Flex requirements and let juniors and seniors either go to a Flex of their choice or just study in their current class. This solution would not have as many downsides other than juniors and seniors not learning as much as they would without following the Flex requirements but those students aren’t the ones who take keystones.
The keystone scores were at their lowest during the years of COVID-19 and the school district is trying its best to make a quick comeback.
The current Flex management surely won’t last too long but students are anticipating to see a change in the school’s new routine. This change most likely will not be soon, however, its unpopularity has been noticed everywhere throughout Big Spring High School.
